Have you ever asked yourself why we exist? More importantly what is one big thing a congregation can begin doing to meld its Strengths and Passions with the needs of the congregation and community, with the primary focus on the community?
First Church of God exists to be a God-seeking community sharing the life and love of Jesus.
A community by definition is:
1. A group of people living in the same place or having a particular characteristic in common.
2.A feeling of fellowship with others, as a result of sharing common attitudes, interests, and goals.
We exist simply because we were created for community. From the beginning of time God has always wanted us to commune with Him in unity and the first time we truly see a community of Christian believers is found in the Acts of the Apostles. In the second chapter where they “continued steadfastly in the apostles’ doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers” where “all who believed were together, and had all things in common, So continuing daily with one accord in the temple, and breaking bread from house to house, they ate their food with gladness and simplicity of heart, praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to the church daily those who were being saved”.
Being a community (church) within ourselves is vital, so we can give and receive the kind of support the Lord intends for His church. But there is also a community that reaches past the front doors of God’s “little country church” we call home. We are a community of believers within a larger community that needs Christ. If we exist to be a God-seeking community (church) sharing the life and love of Jesus, then we need to make sure we are the type of community (church) we were created for.
My challenge to you is to seek to find new and exciting ways to reach out to our community and intentionally plan to meet new people, to grow and nurture our relationships as we seek the kind of love and mutual commitment that is both willing to give and receive.
Because they (the church in the Acts) were willing to share their faith they had favor with all the people and the Lord (through their efforts) was able to add to the church daily those that were being saved. Let’s make sure were doing our part.
